Spotting is the First phase of an Encounter, it start when a PC (Player Character) detected a nearby enemy or vice versa
Interrupting Encounters in this stage is fairly complicated
as you need the knowledge of what kind of predator is spotting you and how can they spot you
neither PCs or Enemies is considered spotted When PCs enter an area with a known Predator/NPC or when the GM roll for Wandering Encounters
In real life a predator and a prey can spot each other in range of Kilometers
for the sake of practicality in B&B the range of the predators and prey is between 50-100 meters
When an enemy is near the player both have the opportunity to spot each other
Players may spot enemies Passively or Actively when the party announce that they are looking for danger
Passive Spotting is determined by a Private roll by the GM
Passive Spot by lead rabbit: \(1d6+\text{INT Base Bonus vs. Predator DV}\)
If the lead animal is a Scout they wil use INT Rating instead
Stalkers and Cryptics may be spotted passively only by Scouts (INT 3rd Level or Higher)
Active Spotting begin once the players announce their character is "scanning" or "posting"
A Scanning Attempt may resolve with a INT Skill check \(1d6+\text{INT Rating Vs. Predator DV}\)
A Posting Attempt can be initiate by an animal standing erect on its hind legs or standing in an elevate place (like a stump) to provide a better view, When Posting +2 is added to the Scanning Attempt
Stalkers and Cryptics may be spotted by Scanning or Posting only by Scouts.
For the Predator the GM will roll a \(1d6+\text{predator's INT Rating}\) this roll must exceed:
If the Animal is moving normally then DV=6
If the Animal is moving stealthily then \(1d6+\text{INT Rating of the lead animal}\)
Flying Predators are considered always in a state of Posting
most predators automatically decide to hunt if they spot a prey
different Predator will also use different hunting technique
Any predator (Expect Cryptic) while reaching range of spotting the GM will conduct a check for passive spotting for both players and Predator
These are the Possibles results:
The party manage to spot the predator:
the party is considered in Safe Distance and may attempt evade the predator and the pursuit altogether. any other result other than 1 on roll a 1d6, the party disappear from the predator's view
the predator manage to spot the party:
a second passive spotting attempt is conducted once the predator is at Close distance \(iPD ยท 2\text{ meters}\), then if no member of the party manage to spot the predator, then they may initiate Combat with Surprise (gain a free combat round), each member of the party must also roll for Shock
neither is able to spot each other:
nothing happen and the check may be repeated up to five time, still, this might be up to the GM that could decide to not even repeat the check a second time.
If animals declare an Active Spotting after the passive one, then the predator will always be treated as it is in Close Distance
Note: Cryptics can only be spot at Close Distance
So if a Predator manage to spot you it will most likely decide to hunt you.
This is the beginning of the Pursuit phase
If played on simplyfied rules no Pursuit take place and the Encounter lead directly into combat
